Wellbeing WorkOut is a facilitated carousel of peer-to-peer conversations intended to strengthen the wellbeing of students in a particular year group (age range 11-18).  It aims to address the problem that more secondary school students are experiencing stress, anxiety and depression.  Its theory of change is that simply talking to one another in a carousel of face-to-face conversations helps develop empathy and trust, improving their wellbeing and self-confidence.

How will the session run?

With 1-3 other guests from the world of work, you will join a group of 30-60 students asking and answering questions about personal wellbeing in a carousel of 5-minute one-to-one conversations.  When the time is up, you will meet another student, and so on until the end of the session.

Before each round of conversation, pairs are asked to sit or stand in response to a gameshow-style quiz question shown on a screen.  Based on recent wellbeing research findings, topics include: sleep, social media, eating, loneliness, anger, exercise, bullying, exams and kindness.  When the true answer is revealed, the one-to-one conversation begins.

Students are prompted with a series of powerful open questions to ask in each round, but the conversations are essentially spontaneous.  During the session, students are trained to use the right body language and to focus on open questioning and active listening, not giving advice.  At the end of the session, students select one or two personal actions to improve their wellbeing.

Safeguarding:  This activity is not intended to identify issues of mental ill health, nor replace specialist counselling or therapy, just to share teenage experiences of wellbeing.  Students are instructed at the start to share only information about themselves which they feel comfortable sharing and to treat others’ information confidentially.  Students are informed that, if feeling seriously worried about somebody’s safety as a direct result of a conversation, they should report it to the teacher in charge of the session.  If a student discloses a concern to you please do not ask any questions. Please inform a member of the Worktree team immediately who will take the next course of action.

Are there ID or vetting requirements? No, there is no need for ID or vetting because a Worktree facilitator and a school teacher will be present at all times so guests will be supervised. Please ensure that you are never left alone with a student(s).

What can/can't I bring to the event? You don't need to bring anything, just be ready to answer the students' questions honestly.

Can I contact the organiser with any questions? Yes, please contact Bhupinder Roda, Tel 07984 178416, bhupinder.roda@worktree.org

Is my registration/ticket transferrable? If you can't make it, please try to find a replacement and contact Bhupinder as soon as possible.
