Funded by the European Social Fund via South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP), following successful pilot work, 'Career WorkOut & (optional) Work Mate Mentoring' enables Worktree volunteers to complete a normal one-hour Career WorkOut session with YMCA residents, then an additional half an hour for a further conversation with one or two residents to support a different stage in the process of their preparation for a job:

  1. What are your strengths?
  2. What jobs use those strengths?
  3. What is it like to do those jobs?
  4. What do employers of those jobs look for in a worker?
  5. What do interviewers look for?

Volunteers who opt to stay for the additional half-hour will be briefed on the question(s) and any material recommended by Worktree, e.g. the 'My Likes' or 'Career Trumps' card games.

In the past, YMCA residents have been interested in pursuing these jobs:  beauty therapist, chef, child carer, computer programmer, electrician, hairdresser, horse stable hand, painter & decorator, plumber, retail assistant, security guard, soldier, tattoo artist, warehouse operative.  While Worktree values volunteers from all industrial sectors and occupational types, people with experience of those jobs, or of being homeless, will be particularly valued in this session!

Who are the participants? Career WorkOut will introduce job-seeking homeless young adults (19-24 year olds) who are YMCA residents to work guests from different work backgrounds so they can find out what it’s really like in different jobs.

Where do I go?  YMCA Main Reception, 63 North Seven Street, Central Milton Keynes, MK9 2DP

What time do I need to arrive?  9.00am

Who is the main YMCA contact?  The main YMCA contact for this Initiative is Kathy Howard or Jenna Rowson.

Who is the main Worktreee contact on the day?  Tom Bulman - 07962 838685 or Theresa Mercer - 07966 204109

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?  There are pay and display parking bays around the building, on North Seven Street, which visitors are able to park in.

Are there ID or vetting requirements?  No, there is no need for ID or vetting because a Worktree facilitator and a YMCA member of staff will be present at all times so guests will be supervised.  Please ensure that you are never left alone with a young adult.

What can/can't I bring to the event?  You don't need to bring anything, just be ready to answer the participants questions honestly.  You can bring business cards for networking.

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?  If you can't make it, please try to find a replacement and contact Theresa Mercer  - theresa.mercer@worktree.org as soon as possible.

Safeguarding – If a  participant discloses any information to you which you think might relate to them coming to harm, or harming others, please inform a member of the Worktree team immediately who will take the next course of action.

Photographs - Photographs may be taken during the session.  These photographs may be used on our website as part of a news story to publicise the event.  If you would prefer that we do not use your image, please let the Worktree Team know as soon as possible or on the day at the event.  Guests are not permitted to take photographs during the session using their own personal devices.
